Key Points

  • Every day we take risks, and we automatically do a risk assessment on them, often without consciously realising.
  • We are quite bad at assessing our own performance when we are fatigued or stressed and we tend to overestimate our ability to perform.
  • Get some GUTs. Gather, Understand and Think Ahead.
  • One decision making model is DECIDE. Try and use one to help you make better decisions.
  • Even though SMS is for organisations, it is still a powerful tool for thinking about risk assessment.
  • Make sure you have some personal minimums, but that you also review then regularly and practise your risk assessment skills.
  • Sometimes you might need to step in, other times to step out. But you can always step up.
